Description

The Practical Mindfulness Book | Paperback Version

The Practical Mindfulness program is a live workshop series (also available as an online self-study program) that brings together the best of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and ontological coaching and presents them through a classical mindfulness lens.

The program—and the Practical Mindfulness book—distills mindfulness down to its three key elements: being aware; being nonjudgemental; and being nonreactive. It then applies those as neat steps, for easy recall and practical use, to each of the following fields of real-life application: Emotion Regulation; Handling Stress & Building Resilience; Complexity & Decision-Making; Creating & Sustaining the State of Flow; Authentic Being & Relating.

About the authors:
NEIL BIERBAUM has been a life and executive coach since 2005 and has practised and taught meditation for more than 20 years. He has worked with large corporates, SMEs, entrepreneurs and private clients – many of them looking to manage the enormous stress and increasing complexity in their work and personal lives.

DR COLINDA LINDE has been a clinical psychologist since 1993 and is the former chairperson of SADAG. She specialises in CBT for anxiety disorders (panic, social phobia), and works extensively in the areas of stress management, work-life balance, sleep issues, assertion and mindfulness.

Here’s an excerpt from the Preface, by co-author Dr Colinda Linde:
“The Practical Mindfulness program was born out of a conversation that Neil and I had about how beneficial mindfulness and meditation has been for both of us. We both agreed that it had helped us, firstly, on a daily basis, with all that life in our colourful country—South Africa—tends to throw at a person. It also enabled us to navigate calmly and rationally through various upheavals in our lives. We both wondered how anyone gets by without it.

“This gave us the idea of bringing mindfulness to everyone, in a practical way that could be used immediately. Out of the conversations that followed, the live workshop series took shape. We chose the key elements of mindfulness based on our years of reading and experience. Then we selected the main areas of life, or fields of application, where we’ve experienced its benefits for ourselves and many of our clients over the years. Our underlying goal was always to share something useful and beneficial, so that others could experience life differently as well.

“We’ve run the programme several times now—more than 250 people have attended—and received knockout feedback about its benefits. Neil’s take-home notes for each module proved even more popular and the request for a book came up more than once. Neil needed little prompting—he’s not only an accomplished meditator but also an award-winning writer, and so he leapt into the task. After months of additional research, writing and editing of his own work, with some proofing and a few nods of approval from me, you’re about to benefit from that output.”
