This is a guided meditation designed to help you become aware of the wandering nature of your mind and to be able to observe rather than fight, or try to stop, your thinking.
It draws on the analogy that the mind is like the vast, clear empty space of the sky, while thoughts are things that occur in the mind, just the way clouds are things that occur in the sky.
Listen to this edited mix of sound snippets from the meditation:
By asking you to hold your attention on your breath, this meditation enables you to notice how your “mind has a mind of its own”, and to learn to not fight that fact. Instead, one learns to see that, just like clouds in the sky, thoughts in the mind are constantly arising, changing, and passing away, and it is possible to focus one’s attention in a relaxed manner, even while this is going on.
There is a 10-minute and a longer 20-minute version. Download using Mac/PC & sync to iTunes to listen on your smartphone.
The long-term benefit of the meditation is to train you to focus your attention in a relaxed manner by observing your breath, while also not fighting the constant flow of thinking.
As you use it more and more, you will become more skilled and easily able to do this on your own. Naturally, the long-term benefits will be enhanced by following the full guided meditation daily or as close to that as possible.
